Bachelor Buttons, or Cornflower, are a dazzling edible flower and you can find them in shades of purple, blue, pink and white. If you come across our Flouwer Co. Edible Flower Seed Blends, we included Bachelor Button seeds of all colors in No.1.
Bachelor Buttons require little maintenance, are not picky about growing conditions - full or partial sun, and sandy or dry soil - and the bees love them! Plants will grow to about 3ft., will bloom all season and will self-seed so that you have another crop the following year. But be careful, because these flowers self-seed they can quickly become unruly. If you want them to self-seed be sure to plant them in an area where they can spread, and do not be scared to thin them out so they don't take over your garden completely.
I am partial to the blues - Blue Boy - because the color is so vibrant - almost neon. However, the pinks and purples are just as nice and we have found that all of the colors hold up well when used in baking. The taste is very mild so you do not need to worry about the flavor of the flower being overpowering. If I had to recommend a use for these, I would say to keep it simple. Tear the petals from the flower and use them to adorn your cheese plate. Or mix the petals into cake batter or top freshly frosted cupcakes in lieu of those dyed and artificial sprinkles.
Ohhhhhh as my mind wanders while I write this, what about mixing some petals into crepe batter or sprinkling some on top of a dutch baby pancake...now that's a breakfast I'd jump out of bed for!
Of the two of us, Theresa is the baker so I will rope her in to getting in the test kitchen and coming out with a fun recipe to inspire you all and we will post it soon.
Let us know if you find a fresh, fun recipe or idea whether it incorporates Bachelor Buttons or not. We want to hear from you!
Stay safe & healthy!
