Flower Co - Our Everyday Sustainability Mission

Updated: May 13

Before I started writing this post, I thought I would do a little research so that I could be more informed about what it actually means to be sustainable…

Well, as I am sure you can imagine, there are many principles, pillars, definitions, etc. of sustainability and I immediately felt overwhelmed with the thought - are we actually sustainable?

I don’t intend to speak for everyone, and I think most of us try to make good choices for the planet, but often get overwhelmed with the details and how to go about it. To avoid riding the panic wave, I decided to settle on a simple notion - Be aware of your resource consumption and reducing unnecessary waste.

This notion is simple enough to keep front of mind without the dread of my personal inability to solve all of the world's environmental challenges in a day.

Broadly speaking, we strive to eat locally and support local businesses. We focus on using biodegradable, sustainably sourced packaging and utensils where we are able. We plant seeds and support recycling or reusing materials. We purchase from growers who have implemented sustainable methods of agriculture. More specifically, with Flouwer Co. Artisanal Crackers, we consider the following when we approach how we might be more eco-friendly, minimizing waste and lightening our footprint:

The Flowers - We select farms to source our flowers and herbs from who we know share our passion for thoughtfully grown and proudly certified organic practices.

The Flour - We source flour from a leader in products packed under kosher supervision and adherence to the tightest tolerances in the milling industry.

While Baking - We minimize food waste by using as much of the dough as possible in our final product. You can see this for yourself when you find a small, and maybe even odd shaped cracker in your box - these are the edges that we don’t want to go to waste!

The Box - We spent tons of time considering smart packaging that is recyclable and biodegradable.

The Food Waste - Because there are inevitably crackers that are too broken or burned to package, we keep those for ourselves and pulse them into seasoned cracker crumbs for use in our home cooking. And when we have accumulated more cracker crumbs than we could ever use, we pass them out to our family, friends and neighbors to inspire something yummy from their kitchens.

It can sometimes feel overwhelming, but making some small good choices is certainly a step in the right direction. Please keep in touch to see what other ways we are striving for sustainability - both as people and as a company. And if you read this and think of additional ways we could be more sustainable, please do not hesitate to contact us! We’d love to hear from you and feature your ideas because we are all in this together after all!

Cheers!
